Frequently Asked Questions

How are we a nature school?

Prickly Pears takes place primarily outside. We focus on learning from and enjoying the nature that surrounds us in the city. Nature schools focus on inquiry- and place-based education. We observe the same places in the city throughout the seasons to embrace place-based learning.

What is the teacher to student ratio?

Prickly Pears at this time is limited to 6 kids with one teacher that acts as a guide for the class. During summer we welcome an assistant and will increase capacity to 8-12 kids.

How many hours are children outside?

Hours outside will vary throughout the year. We go outside in all weather and will go outside for a portion of each day. During warmer/milder weather we will spend 5-6 hours outside daily. During winter we will spend as much time outside as feels safe.

Are children still outside during freezing temperatures and rain?

Yes! We believe in going outside in all weather. Weather appropriate clothes should be worn daily.

Is lunch provided?

No, parents are responsible for sending lunch. Due to allergies and dietary restrictions, it is easier to meet everyone’s need this way. Children tend to enjoy sharing/trading lunches with each other. I think this is a great opportunity for children to try foods that might not normally be in their lunch or in their home.

Is there technology in the classroom?

Prickly Pears is a screen-free environment. I believe children learn best in an environment where they are able to explore freely without distractions.

Where are you located?

Prickly Pears Nature School starts and ends the day at Emily’s house in Tower Grove East, just a short walk from Tower Grove Park.
